In light of recent incidents of suspected contamination of municipal water in the state, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has warned citizens and asked them to ensure hygienic practices while using drinking water.
GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg said the corporation is taking measures to prevent contamination by identifying and relocating pipes that pass through sewage.
He said 448 water pipes intersecting sewers in different parts of the city have been identified. He added that the company has started work to relocate these pipelines at a cost of about ₹ 4 crore.
Approximately 2,500 to 3,000 Free Residual Chlorine (FRC) water quality tests are performed daily to ensure safe drinking water quality. In addition, GVMC’s mobile water testing van conducts on-site water quality tests at various locations. Water treatment plants (WTPs) and tanks are cleaned once in three months and cleaning valves are opened every 15 days to flush and clean the pipes, he noted.
The commissioner asked the people to immediately inform the concerned water authorities of any leakage of drinking water pipes in their respective areas to avoid wastage and contamination. “If you notice any change in the colour, taste or smell of the supplied tap water, people must report it to their local water supply officials,” he said.
A 24×7 complaint cell has been set up at GVMC and citizens can lodge complaints regarding water supply issues on toll free number 1800 4250 0009 or 0891-2746672.
