Gurugram hit-and-run: 2km chase after night club party precedes biker Shivani Chauhan’s crash

Two days after the arrest of two men in the Gurugram hit and run case involving biker Shivani Chauhan, known as Sia, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the incident found that the accused and three friends were returning from a night party at a club when they chased the woman on Golf Course Road, police sources told The Hindu.

Investigation revealed that Kalyan Bainsla, who was driving the car, and his three friends were at the Empire Club Bar and Lounge in Gurugram’s Sector 25 between midnight and 5 am before they left together, sources said. Lavnish was sitting on the passenger seat at the time of the incident.

The first interaction between the occupants of the car and Ms. Chauhan took place near the Sector 53 metro station. After a brief argument, Lavnish urged Mr. Bainsla to chase the biker, the car then chased her for about 1.5 to 2 kilometers before hitting her two-wheeler, SIT sources said.

The sequence is now a key point in the investigation as police try to establish whether the collision was an accident, as Mr Bainsla claimed, or a deliberate act after a chase, as Ms Chauhan claimed.

The incident was captured by cameras mounted on the sports bike of Ms Chauhan and her biker friends, with the footage later circulating on social media and sparking outrage. The police initially registered a case under provisions related to reckless driving and endangering life. A charge of attempted murder was subsequently added to the FIR after examining the CCTV footage and the video recorded by the biker.

The case is being investigated by a five-member SIT comprising the Station House Officer of Gurugram’s Sector 55/56 police station, officials from the Sohna crime branch and other personnel.

Mr Bainsla, who was arrested in Rajasthan, and Lavnish were produced before a Gurugram court on Wednesday (September 16, 2026) and sent to two-day police custody. Police have asked for their remand to reconstruct the sequence of events and find out how the collision happened.

The SIT has also filed notices against two other passengers in the car. Their statements will be recorded as part of the investigation, after which the police will decide whether their arrest is necessary, sources said. Police were also looking for CCTV footage of the club.

Meanwhile, blood and urine samples of the accused have been sent for forensic examination and reports are awaited. Because the arrest occurred three days after the incident, police were unable to use an immediate blood alcohol concentration (BAC) test. The forensic reports are expected to help investigators determine whether the accused was under the influence of alcohol or any other substance prior to the incident.

Ms. Chauhan alleged that the occupants of the car were drunk and deliberately chased and beat her. But Mr Bainsla denied hitting her on purpose and told police the collision was an accident.

Police are examining competing claims through CCTV footage, witness statements and crime scene reconstruction. Police said the accused hurled abuse at the motorcyclist and tried to kill her during the chase.

But for Ms. Chauhan, the arrest of the two men is only the beginning of the process. She said she was not satisfied with the arrest of only two of the four passengers and demanded that all those involved face prosecution.

“The mistake they made was they tried to stop and harass a girl in broad daylight on the road and hit her so hard she could have died,” she said.

“I also want to say that their arrest is not something that gives me satisfaction. When people ask me if they have been arrested, I feel that this is only the first part of the process. All four men should be arrested and should be given the most severe punishment possible and should set an example so that in the future any man, whether in a car or on a bike, will think ten times before harassing any girl,” she said.
