Why is he celebrating Guru Purnima?
Guru Purnima is observed as a tribute to mentors and recognizes the role of guru who pass wisdom and leadership.
The term “guru” in Sanskrit refers to a spiritual teacher or mentor, while “Purnima” means a full moon day.
In Hinduism, the day is of great religious significance. It reminds of the birth of Maharishi Veda, a legendary sage who has compiled a Hindu epic – Mahabharat and is honored as one of the greatest spiritual teachers in Indian tradition.
However, Guru Purnima is not limited to Hinduism.
The festival also has a deep importance in Buddhism and Jainism.
Buddhists call this day in honor of Lord Buddha, because it is believed that after reaching enlightenment he added his first sermon in Sarnath on this date.
Jains observes the guru of Purnima to give up the respect of Lord Mahavir and his main student Gautam Swami.
