A gunfight broke out between the Indian Army and insurgents in Manipur’s Bishnupur district, police said on Thursday (March 26, 2026).
The gunfight, which lasted for about 30 minutes, began after suspected Kuki militants opened fire on an army post on Wednesday evening (March 25, 2026).
“On Wednesday (March 25, 2026) at approximately 11:40 p.m., suspected armed Kuki militants opened fire in the general area of Phouljang/Gothol and directed fire at the Indian Army post at Phougakchao Awang Leikai,” the statement said.
“The Indian Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (58 Battalion) deployed in the area responded quickly by returning fire towards the source, leading to an exchange that lasted for approximately 30 minutes,” it said.
Following the gunfight, the Army, CRPF, police and Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) launched a combined search operation in the area where the firing took place and the adjoining hilly areas.
“The situation is being closely monitored and security forces will continue operations in the surrounding hills,” it said, while urging civilians to refrain from spreading rumours.
