D Gukesh (photo credit: Fide) Chennai: English Grand Master and commentator David Howell knows what it means to be a miracle, being another big thing. Howell, who became the youngest British who ever won the GM in 2007 at the age of 16 – a record he held until 2024 – also knows what will come. Weight of expectations, silent battle from the board, test of inertia force.
It’s a test D Gukesh now faces. At the age of 18 he conquered 64 squares and became the youngest world champion in chess. But if there is one thing to reach the peak, there will be another. With every candidate who is now studying his games, the road in front of us will only be harder.

Howell, triple British chess champion and former Wunderkind, saw miracles rise and fall. Some have continued dominance for years, while others break down under pressure. What distinguishes Gukesh believes that Howell is not just his talent, but his strong thinking.
During the chat with the toi 34 -year -old, which recently joined Magnus Carlsen (co -founder) “Take Take” as a host and chess expert, Gukesh said to continue flourishing at the highest level.
“Gukesh is surrounded by the best and doing all the right things. I must admit that I did not expect his increase to be so fast. I knew he was very good; I played against him when he was 12, just after becoming a great.
“I don’t like much for him, but just to keep the same approach: Stay ground, stay curious and concentrate on improvement rather than titles, printing or pressure. It seems to have the right people around him and have good effects,” Howell said.
Chess World Gukesh grew up in looks very different from what Howell knew. Today’s miracles have structured coaching, training camps and financial support, things Howell never had.
“I think it’s great for this Indian generation because they are pushing each other. In England I was lucky to have gained opportunities, but no one really led me forward. Everything is much more professional now. Prodigies have camps, good coaches and receive monetary support from a young age.
And Howell is right, Gukesh is not alone. R Pragnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi are among the stars that control the Indian chess boom and constantly call on each other to greater heights. Recently Pragg defeated Gukesh in the chess dress of Tata Steel in Wijk Aan Zee in the Netherlands. Howell sees the spread of undulating effects outside India.
“Turkey is inspired from India. Two Turkish young people are already more than 2600. If they go to the Indian model: structured training, focus and discipline. They will also reach the peak soon.”
What does an Indian meteoric rise control? “I don’t think it’s just one factor; it’s a combination of things. Viswanathan Anand was a catalyst, raised interest and inspired a generation.
“On a mission to make chess a spectator sport”:
Howell stepped out of chess for more than once, but his passion for the game still brings him back. From now on, it focuses on seeing and more accessible. With “Take Take” sees the opportunity to use technology and take sport to a wider audience.
“Chess spreading is my main passion. Technology has shown us that the horizons are even wider. That’s why I joined to take the chess – not only for serious players, but for everyone.
