If Dharamshala offered a glimpse of seam-friendly conditions a night earlier, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad took it up a notch in Ahmedabad on Monday. On a pitch that offered movement throughout the innings, the Gujarat fast bowlers completely dismantled SRH to seal an impressive 82-run victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
GT defended a modest total of 168 and Sunrisers were bowled out for just 86, the lowest total in the franchise’s IPL history. Kagiso Rabada and Jason Holder picked up three wickets each while Mohammed Siraj set the tone early with a maiden wicket.
Conditions in Ahmedabad were tailor-made for pace bowling. There was moisture under the surface and enough softness for the ball to connect and swing.
“I think hitting good lengths and swinging and seaming the ball will be crucial. The wicket is still a bit sticky and soft. It suits the ability of our bowlers,” Sai Sudharsan said during the innings break.
The GT pitchers executed this plan to perfection.
GT PACERS BREAK SRH
Siraj struck in the very first over, dismissing Travis Head with a maiden wicket to immediately put SRH under pressure. At the other end, Rabada was attacked briefly by Abhishek Sharma who smashed him for a six off the first ball he faced. However, the South African responded immediately, pulling his left hand back a place and pushing the inside edge onto the stumps.
Rabada continued his burst by removing two more batsmen, including Ishan Kishan, in the over, effectively breaking the backbone of SRH’s chase. While both teams scored at a similar rate in the first six overs, Gujarat’s advantage came from the wicket column.
Rabada’s spell has also seen him take 16 power-play wickets this season, the most by any bowler in the tournament. Meanwhile, Siraj applied relentless pressure from the other end, bowling 12 balls.
Help for sailors never went away. Even in the middle overs the ball kept moving, allowing Jason Holder to take full advantage of the conditions. The tall all-rounder repeatedly hit hard lengths and extracted a nasty bounce to keep SRH pinned.
Even Heinrich Klaasen, SRH’s leading run-scorer this season, failed to hit the mark as wickets fell at regular intervals. The innings ended up being bowled out for just 86 in 14.5 overs.
SAI-SUNDAR ANCHOR GT
Earlier, Gujarat Titans themselves struggled to settle after being asked to bat first. Praful Hinge impressed again with the new ball and helped SRH to an early lead. Gujarat lost both Shubman Gill and Jose Buttler cheaply and recorded their lowest power-play score of the season.
Youngster Nishant Sindhu tried to bring momentum to the innings with a positive cameo. The Haryana batsman attacked from the start and scored quickly before being dismissed for 22 by Pat Cummins.
Sai Sudharsan then took charge of the innings alongside Washington Sundar. On the seam-friendly surface, Sudharsan initially focused on stroke rotation and smart placement before picking up speed later in the innings.
The left-hander brought up his 17th IPL fifty in 38 balls and also claimed the orange cap from Heinrich Klaasen. More importantly, crossed the 500-run mark for the third consecutive IPL season.
After Sudharsan left, Sundar provided the final push. The all-rounder produced some eye-catching knocks despite the difficult batting conditions, notably against Eshan Malinga in the 19th over when he lost his balance twice but still managed to guide the ball to the boundary.
Their partnership helped Gujarat recover from a shaky start to post what eventually turned out to be a total win.
An emphatic victory rose Gujarat Titans top the points table with 16 points and put them within touching distance of playoff qualification. With two league games remaining, both against other play-off opponents, GT now have a strong advantage in the race for the top four.
But for Sunrisers Hyderabad, the defeat will be hard to digest. After winning the toss and bowling first in favorable conditions, they expected to chase down 169 comfortably. Instead, their batting unit crumbled dramatically under the pressure.
That leaves them with plenty of questions ahead of their final two games, both of which also come against teams fighting for playoff spots.
