Gujarat became the first Indian state to initiate an initiative of the sequence of the genome focused exclusively on the tribal community.
At a high -level consultation by the chairman of the development of state tribal development Kuber Dindor, the sequence project was announced here to identify the risks of genetic health and allow precise health care for the tribal population. This initiative sequences the genomes of 2,000 individuals from tribal communities in 17 districts in the state.
Gujarat Biotechnology Research Center (GBRC) is carried out by the project called “Creating a database of reference genomes for the tribal population in Gujarat” and is part of the state budget 2025–26.
Detection of genetic disorders
Mr Dindor said that the initiative would focus on early detection and targeted treatment of genetic disorders such as sickle -shaped anemia, Thalassemia and certain hereditary cancer.
“This project will serve as a milestone – bridging the abyss between science and tradition – towards the healthier and prosperous future of our tribal communities,” he said. “It is not only a scientific initiative, but a focused campaign that would bring long -term improvements in tribal health.”
The genetic data collected will also be used to identify markers related to natural immunity and support the development of personalized health care solutions. The project will include advanced infrastructure for sampling, sequencing and interpretation of genetic data, the officials said.
Experts at the event stressed that the initiative is not limited to scientific research, but its aim is to strengthen the tribal community using advanced technologies and data. The project will include state -of -the -art sampling devices and genetic analysis.
