Ukrainian President Volodymyr confirmed Zelenky that the Ukrainian forces were captured by two Chinese nationals while fought alongside Russian troops in Donetsk in eastern Ukraine. Revelation comes in the middle of the growing control of Beijing’s role in conflict.
“Captured in Ukrainian territory”
In a statement published on X (formerly Twitter) Zelsky stated that both individuals were caught during the active combat operation.
“Our army captured two Chinese citizens who fought as part of the Russian army. It happened in Ukrainian territory – in the area of Donetsk.”
He said that individuals were found who bear identification documents, bank cards and personal data, now in custody of the Ukrainian authorities.
Kyiv has suspicion of wider involvement
He warned that both men could only be the tip of the iceberg.
“We have information that suggests that there are many more Chinese citizens in the occupiers than just two,” he said.
“We are currently verifying all the facts – intelligence, Ukraine’s security service and the relevant units of the armed forces are working on it.”
Ordered the Foreign Minister to contact Beijing
He said he ordered the Ukrainian Foreign Minister to immediately participate in China on captured individuals.
“I ordered the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to immediately contact Beijing and explain how China intends to respond to it.”
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has already convened Chinese fees for explanation.
Green: “Putin does anything other than ending of war”
He used the incident to underline what he described as Moscow’s efforts to extend the war by involving foreign fighters.
“The involvement of China, along with other countries, whether directly or indirectly, in this war in Europe is a clear signal that Putin intends to do anything other than end the war.”
“He is looking for ways to continue fighting. It certainly requires an answer. A response from the United States, Europe and all people from all over the world who wants peace.”
Prisoners in custody is under investigation
He said that both Chinese nationals are now in relation to the security service of Ukraine (SBU) and are part of an ongoing investigation.
“The captured Chinese citizens are now in relation to the security service of Ukraine. There are relevant investigative and operational measures.”
The situation comes in the middle of wider concerns about the presence of foreign fighters in Ukraine, including reports on North Korean troops operating in Kursk on the Russian side of the border.
