(Bloomberg) – Greece will establish two national maritime parks in an effort to protect wild animals, which could potentially bond ties with neighboring Turkey.
The parks will be located in the Ionian Sea and southern cycling, an island group in the Aegean Sea, west and east of the mainland. Last year, the Greek government’s promise was pulled out of Turkey from Turkey last year. Both countries were historically contrary to the marine borders and economic rights in parts of the Eastern Mediterranean.
“These parks will be among the largest protected naval areas throughout the Mediterranean,” said Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday. By 2030, the country will allow its goal to “protect 30% of his territorial waters”, from the plan, the Prime Minister added.
The establishment of two sea parks is intended to preserve ecosystems, restore balance and set a new standard for sea protection, Mitsotakis said.
“It is necessary to avoid unilateral measures in closed or pilot seas, such as Aegean and Mediterranean,” the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in response, adding that Ankara would announce his own projects “aimed at protecting the environment in sea areas” in the coming days.
The area in the Aegean threatened plants and species of wild animals and covers almost 9,500 square kilometers. The Ionian Park will expand by 18,000 square kilometers and will include places used for endangered animals such as some sea turtles.
“They will be huge shrines for life under the waves,” Mitsotakis said, adding that “the most important thing is that the extremely harmful practice of the lower trawling will be forbidden inside these marine zones.”
