Govt. will soon hold talks with tribal organizations on key issues, says Naidu

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Monday reiterated that the Andhra Pradesh government accords top priority to protecting tribal rights and welfare and assured the tribal community that there is no need to worry over issues related to GO No. 3 and Land Transfer Order 1/70.

Mr. Naidu discussed the welfare and development of Scheduled Tribe communities with senior Secretariat officials and discussed the implications of the 2020 Supreme Court judgment quashing GO No. 3 which provided 100% reservation in teaching posts in Scheduled Areas for local tribal candidates. He said the coalition government was exploring all legally viable alternatives to ensure that tribal communities continued to receive the intended benefits.

The Chief Minister claimed that although the NV No. 3, introduced in 2000, remained in force for nearly two decades, the previous government failed to defend it effectively before the Supreme Court, leading to its invalidity. He said the current government is exploring options within the Constitutional Court ruling.

Mr. Naidu directed officials to hold consultations with tribal organizations on employment, land rights and other issues related to Scheduled Tribes and involve them in efforts to overcome legal hurdles. He also directed officials to include Alluri Sitharama Raju district in Zone I and Polavaram district in Zone II and speed up the process.

The chief minister assured the tribal communities on the issue of bauxite mining and said the government would not take any decision to undermine tribal rights or sentiments. He also said that there was no need to worry about the implementation of the 1/70 law and asked the officials to clearly communicate the government’s position.

Mr Naidu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improve healthcare, education, transport and livelihood opportunities in the tribal areas and said that sustainable development would only be achieved by improving the living standards of the tribal communities. The review meeting was attended by senior officials and Tribal Welfare Minister Gummidi Sandhya Rani.
