Power Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar said the government is taking comprehensive measures to ensure remunerative prices for tobacco farmers and protect their interests.
Addressing the media after a review meeting with Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on the problems faced by tobacco farmers, Mr. Ravi Kumar said officials have been instructed to ensure transparency in the procurement process and prevent any practices that could adversely affect farmers.
All purchases have been directed to be made through an auction platform operated by the Tobacco Board, leaving no scope for unauthorized transactions.
The minister said the government will closely monitor procurement to ensure that farmers receive fair value for their produce.
He argued that increased production should not be used as a reason to lower prices or disadvantage growers.
Highlighting the concerns raised by the farmers, Mr. Ravi Kumar said that the rejection of tobacco imported to the shopping centers has led to financial difficulties for the growers.
To address the issue, the chief minister has advised companies to buy tobacco at a minimum price of ₹200 per kg so that farmers do not have to resort to distress sales.
The minister noted that higher prices realized during the previous season encouraged farmers to expand cultivation this year, adding that companies should not cite factors such as increased taxes on cigarettes and related products as a reason to reject tobacco or limit purchases.
