In the middle of the threat of cyber security based on China, China’s novelty of the Ministry of the Union and renewable energy has ordered all manufacturers of the original devices (OEM) supplying inverters within the “PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana” to connect their inverters with the Ministry of National Services and Software Platform.
The Ministry will notify the date for implementing the Directive.
In the announcement, the Ministry stated that the integration of 10 million roof solar systems within this system would also bring challenges on the stability of the grid and concerns about cyber security.
He added that communication modules of inverters that transmit data to servers outside India not only represent the risks of unauthorized controls, but also threaten national energy sovereignty by detecting sensitive energy consumption and data generation.
“All OEMs that have been included in the delivery of the inverter within the PMSG: MBY Scheme must be compulsorily attached to its inverters directly to national servers and software managed by the Ministry or any other agency designated by the Ministry, with effect from the date to be announced,” he said.
The inverters are essential components of solar energy systems because they convert a direct current (DC) generated by solar panels to alternating current (AC) that can use houses and businesses. They also facilitate the interaction between solar energy systems and electric grid, allowing the transfer of excess energy back to the grid.
The Ministry organized several rounds of negotiations with participating parties to implement the framework for monitoring the benefits of generation of roof solar installations. Discussions also thought about the centralization of roof solar data on the national software platform organized on servers based in India and managed by the Ministry, or any other government agency, to ensure effective monitoring of millions of inverters and aggregate great capacity and ensure the security and stability of the grid.
The government also ordered that all communication devices of the inverters or Dongle or data protocols deployed within the scheme must have a SIM communication protocol on the machine (M2M) to allow secure and reliable data transfer.
PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has been carried out since February 2024 and since July 15, more than 1,545,000 households were covered as part of the program. Within this program, the government plans to install roof solar systems on 10 million houses and add 30 GW solar energy.
Development comes against the background of undocumented communication equipment found inside some Chinese AC devices in May and increases safety concerns.
Over the past few years, the government has taken a number of steps to reduce dependence on Chinese imports in the renewable energy space. In this course, it has increased import obligations for solar modules and cells and introduced incentives to strengthen local production of these products.
