Power Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar said the government aimed to generate 160 gigawatts of renewable energy under an integrated clean energy policy and focused on long-term sustainability and protection of consumer interests.
During the budget debate in the Legislative Assembly on Friday, Mr. Ravi Kumar said that the reforms initiated in the power sector by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had helped the state in its rapid progress and recalled that the state was in surplus power during 2014-19 when the TDP was at the helm of the government.
The power sector came under severe financial stress during 2019-24, he said, claiming that electricity rates were hiked nine times during the period, resulting in a burden of ₹30,000 crore on consumers. The current government has stabilized indebted energy systems.
The minister said that Andhra Pradesh led the way with an installed capacity of 21,457 megawatts (MW), of which 37% came from renewable sources, noting that AP Genco recently achieved a record generation of 6,000 MW.
As a result of improved production and financial discipline, the government reduced tariffs by 13 paise per unit through a first-of-its-kind genuine reduction mechanism in the country. Power purchase cost has been reduced from Rs.7.71 to Rs.6.35 per unit.
Andhra Pradesh has 378 extra high voltage substations, transformer capacity of 71,549 MVA and 33,000 circuit kilometers of transmission lines, Mr. Ravi Kumar said, adding that approval has been secured for a 2,000 MW BESS that would facilitate power supply at one of the lowest tariffs in the country.
