The state government has focused its attention on extending Indiramma Indlu, a housing scheme for the weaker section, to urban areas.
The decision comes against the backdrop of rapid progress in the construction of Indiramma Indlu in rural areas. The government on Wednesday issued detailed guidelines for the construction of houses in urban areas that have revived urban slums.
Eligible beneficiaries living on their own plots of nominal area can opt for the construction of G+1 houses under the scheme. Considering the fact that most of the urban poor own plots less than 60 square meters, the government has released guidelines to allow them to build their own houses with RCC roofs by paying ₹5,000 in four installments according to the stages of construction.
The beneficiaries could start building a plinth with an area of 30 m2 with a room of 200 m2 on the ground floor and on the first floor. The housing units should occupy the construction of two rooms of 96 m2 and 70 m2, together with a kitchen, which should be at least 35.5 m2. Apartment units should be compulsorily equipped with a bathroom and toilet.
Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy said the decision to relax the guidelines was taken to ensure that the poor realize their dream of owning a home. He said the relaxation would enable poor urban dwellers living under makeshift shelters and other makeshift facilities to build their own houses.
After reviewing the progress of Indiramma Indlu with senior officials, he said the decision followed a detailed study on the need to extend the benefits of Indiramma Indlu to the urban poor. The guidelines were accordingly relaxed, allowing people with minimal equipment to build their own dwellings.
He urged the officials to focus on building houses in urban areas as it was an uphill task compared to the implementation of the Indiramma Indlu program in rural areas.
