To strengthen specialized health services at the local level, the state government has asked public and private medical colleges in Karnataka to adopt taluk hospitals, community health centers and primary health centres.
The Department of Health and Medical Education has issued a joint circular to this effect as part of the Chief Minister’s 100-day programme.
Under this initiative, each government and private medical college will establish one taluk hospital, one community health center and one primary health center and provide specialized medical services, training, quality improvement and other health support, according to the circular.
The health centers to be admitted will be determined by district. Heads of medical faculties and district health workers will conclude contracts for the provision of services.
Specialized care closer to patients
The initiative is expected to improve the availability of specialist doctors at the taluk level and community health centres, reducing the need for patients to travel to district hospitals or medical colleges for treatment.
The departments said the arrangement would help strengthen chronic disease management as well as surgical services at the secondary care level.
Medical schools will provide specialized services and other support required by the participating facilities to improve the quality and availability of care closer to where people live.
