Minister of port, transport and waterway, Sarbananda Sonowal announced on Monday’s investment plans £5,000 crore to increase the waterways and naval sectors in the northeast.
He said his ministry provoked the main initiatives, including the expansion of the capacity of the Center for Naval Skills (MSDC) in Guwahati, as well as the establishment of the Excellence Center (COE) in Dibruugar, towards the development of the naval sector in the region.
In an interview with a press conference in Guwahati, the Minister said India was on the way to become a global maritime powerhouse and transformation that the industry has seen in the last 11 years of the government, with the historical growth of port capacity and the treatment, green transport, tourism and youth skills.
Over the past 11 years, the Ministry of Port, Transport and Waterways (PUPSW) has seen the growth of the Indian maritime sector with a record increase in handling, capacity and coastal transport.
The main ports have almost doubled their capacity, tourism is growing with ambitious new terminals and 50,000 youth from the northeast will be trained for naval work.

Key legislative and digital reforms, green transport initiatives and projects such as the Kaladanian project for vicodial transit transport, strengthen regional connectivity and trade. Indian ports are now worldwide competitive, with nine rankings in the top 100 best banks and Visakhapatnam Port reaches the TOP 20.
Sonowal said that the government aims to train 50,000 youth from the region in maritime skills in the next decade and to offer them secured job opportunities in the growing sector.
The aim of this transformation is the Center for the Development of Naval Skills (MSDC) in Guwahati as well as the upcoming COE (COE) center in Dibruugarh. COE will be developed with an investment £200 Crores. Both centers are likely to produce 500 jobs per year.
“Our vision is to train, enable and seize 50,000 northeast youth with world -class naval skills in the next decade and ensure meaningful jobs and growth. Our centers in Guwahati and Dibruugarh will be the back of this transformation,” Sonowal said.
The Ministry has done in the value of projects £1,000 crore in the inland waterway sector in the northeast in the last two years £300 crore work completed and £700 crore scheduled for completion by 2025. The main initiatives include permanent freight terminals in Panda, Joggoopa, Dhubri, Bogibeel, Karimganj and Badarpur; Year -round excavating the navigation pathway; New approach to panda port; Renewal of inheritance in Dibruugarh; Tourist says it’s worth £299 crore; skills development centers in Guwahati and Dibruugarh; And plans for beacons in Bogibeel, Biswanath Ghat, Silghat and Panda.

Feasibility studies have been completed and detected for operation in Guwahati, Tezpur and Dibruugarh and cruise ships are obtained as part of central programs. For Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura, efforts will be expanded to extend the IWT infrastructure and support of the water -based tourism. The Operationalization of the Indo-Bangladesh (IBPR) route offers new trading routes bypassing Siliguri corridor, strengthens regional connectivity and align with the wider vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
Sonowal responds to a question about the state of the Kalladan multimodal transit transport project (KMTTP) and said: “The Kaladan Multimodal Transit Transit project is the result of Indian Myanmar friendship.
It is a strategic initiative for increasing the connection between Indian northeastern and Myanmar – it will be fully functional by 2027… The northeast stands in the heart of the Bharat Development Agenda. This once smoked area, which is authorized by the transformation policy of “ACT EAST”, is now ready for direct and shorter access to international maritime routes.
The quick design of the Sittwe port in Myanmar is proof of this commitment. As soon as it is fully functional, the region will unlock new business opportunities not only for northeast India, but also for Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal and Myanmar their connection with Southeast Asia. ”
From Paletwa, Myanmar to Zorinpui in Mizoram, the Sittwe port connects to Paletwa in Myanmar through the inland waterway and from Paletwa to Zorinpui in Mizoram via the road component. From Sittwe, Myanmar to Sarboom, Tripura, goods from Calcutta to Sittwe Port can be sent to the port of Teknaf in Bangladesh, which is only 60 naval sittwe. From the port goods, the Teknaf can be transported on the road to Sabroom, which is 300 km away. Sabroom has an integrated customs limit between Bangladesh and Tripura.

The Sittwe Port and Kaladan project will greatly benefit Tripura due to significant shortening of transport and logistics costs. Main load for export for Sittwe port; IE exports from Myanmar include rice, wood, fish and seafood, oil products and clothing and textiles. Main load for import for port sittwe; IE imports from Myanmar include, among other things, building materials such as cement, steel and bricks.
Other key initiatives include the deployment of 100 boats operated by the global Major NW2 and 16 by 2025, which aims to significantly strengthen freight movement across Assam and neighboring states. In order to ensure the closingness between the year, the Ministry plans to deploy 10 amphibians and cutting sections of the Dredgers, supported by the investment £610 crore. Sonowal also announced plans for the development of 85 community pier after the northeast to improve local connectivity.
Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized the efforts to support tourism and regional trade and shared it £300 Crore will be invested in building new tourist and cargo pier in Silghat, Nonam, Biswanath Ghat and Guijan. In a large crossing towards modern urban transport, the projects of Wawahati, Tezpur and Dibruugarh metro projects are planned, with feasibility studies have already completed. The government will also set up Panda, Tezpur, Biswanath & Bogibeel, each of which is equipped with IMD centers, with the support of the Ministry of the Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Indian Government to provide accurate local weather forecasts.
