Govt. medical doctors will go on an indefinite strike from February 16

February 11, 2026

The Kerala State Medical College Teachers’ Association (KGMCTA) will go on an indefinite strike from February 16 and will boycott outpatient clinical services as well as all academic activities.

The Central Executive Committee of the KGMCTA, after taking stock of the talks with the government on its various demands and the government’s “partially favourable” steps taken so far, decided on Tuesday to continue the agitation as planned.

In its statement, KGMCTA said that many of its essential demands remain unresolved.

On Wednesday, faculty, students and PTA members in all government medical colleges across the state will hold candlelight vigils of protest and solidarity, asking the authorities to ensure the future of medical education and the sustainability of public health systems.

On February 19, doctors march to the Secretariat and stage a dharna. Starting February 19, doctors plan to boycott non-urgent operations and other elective procedures indefinitely.

From February 26, the faculty will boycott university examination duties and related duties.

KGMCTA said it has exempted casualty (emergency services), delivery room, ICU, inpatient service and post-mortem from the strike.

It said the strike was necessary to ensure the standard of medical education, to ensure the continued existence of state medical colleges and to protect the rights of ordinary patients to health care.
