Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday said the government will look into the demand for setting up a tribal university in the state.
Speaking to presspersons at Rajanahalli Sri Maharshmi Valmiki Guru Peetha near Harihar on Monday, the Chief Minister said that an appropriate decision would be taken after verification.
The chief minister’s reply rekindled hopes of setting up a separate university for the study of tribal culture.
In fact, in 2017, the Ministry of Kannada and Culture proposed a tribal university to promote further study and research in tribal communities and subsequently the state government asked the higher education ministry to initiate the process.
However, in December 2022, the Karnataka State Council of Higher Education (KSHEC), under the Ministry of Higher Education, rejected the proposal in its AGM.
The meeting favored offering courses or subjects related to tribal studies in the existing Janapada (Folklore) University and other state universities.
