The government has taken the right stand on the Sabarimala gold theft case, Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) state secretary MV Govindan said on Friday, saying action against former Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) president A. Padmakumar, who has been arrested in connection with the case, will be taken only after the charges against him are clearly proved.
Addressing the media at an event organized by the Kannur Press Club, Mr. Govindan said that the investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) would take months to conclude and that issues related to Rahul Mamkootathil, MLA, should not be linked to the Sabarimala case. The Congress action against Mr. Mamkootathila was only a face-saving exercise, he claimed, accusing the party leadership of protecting him.
Mr. Govindan said the SIT, under the supervision of the Supreme Court, was working to bring all the culprits to justice and that “not even a grain of Sabaraimala’s gold has been lost”.
He predicted an unequivocal victory for the LDF in the local body elections and claimed that the front would wrest back the Kannur Corporation.
Responding to a query about the LDF fielding candidates with criminal cases and those convicted of attacking the police, he said that individuals convicted in various cases can still contest and that it is not uncommon to be accused in political cases.
