Amid continuing violence in Manipur, its Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on Wednesday (June 17, 2026).
Mr. Bhalla is learned to have briefed the minister on the security situation in the northeastern state, where tensions between the Kuki and Naga communities have escalated over the past month.
Ethnic violence that first erupted in the state on May 3, 2023 between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei people has so far claimed the lives of over 260 people.
“The overall security situation in the state was discussed,” said a senior government official.
While no details were given, the Union Home Ministry posted on X: “Manipur Governor Shri @BhallaAjay26 met Union Home Minister & Cooperation Minister Shri @AmitShah today.”
After remaining under President’s rule for a year, the elected government in Manipur was restored on February 4 this year.
Apart from Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, two Deputy Chief Ministers – Losii Dikho and Nemcha Kipgen, representing the Naga and Kuki communities respectively, were sworn in. Manipur’s cabinet expansion is yet to take place even though the state’s assembly elections are due early next year. Ms Kipgen, who took the oath virtually from Delhi, has not yet traveled to Imphal and attends all meetings online.
