Governor Thaawwarchand Gehlot gave his consent to Greater Bengalur Governance Bill, 2024, and the state government issued a announcement of the Bulletin.
Legislation will enable the establishment of the Bengaluru Office (GBA) for coordination and supervision of the development of a larger area of Bengalur.
In March, the governor returned the bill, which passed in both houses during a budget meeting that sought to clarify from the state, even though the collectives of civil society asked the Governor to ask the bill. Activists in the petition argued that GBA’s creation violates the 74 amendment. After the bill was returned, the state government sent it back to the Governor and provided an explanation.
Many activists expected the governor to pass the bill to the President who quotes his constitutional validity.
Prakash Belvawadi, an actor and an activist talking to Hindu, said: “Civil society will reiterate to discuss further procedures in connection with the law. We can explore legal possibilities because the bill has now been approved by the governor.”
What legislation means
With the ACT with the governor, no more than seven urban corporations in the larger area of Bengalur will set up for efficient, participating and responsive administration.
The law will seize Ward Committees to become basic units of city administration and facilitate community participation.
The law will integrate and streamline the political responsibility of all public bodies providing services in a larger area of Bengalur. Its aim is to improve the quality of life of all citizens by introducing a decentralized, participating, efficient and fair government framework for Bengaluru. The bill was approved during the budget meeting of the legislature in March.
Agri Varsity Bill gets consent
In the further development of the governor, he also gave his consent to the universities of agricultural sciences (amendment), 2025, for the establishment of a new university of agricultural sciences in Mandya.
The university, located on the VC farm in Mandya, will provide districts Mandya, Hassan, Mysuru, Chamarajanagar and Kodag.
