Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Thursday removed KK Geethakumary as Vice-Chancellor of Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit (SSUS), Kalady, with immediate effect.
A notification issued by Lok Bhavan said that Ciza Thomas, Vice-Chancellor of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, will bear the additional charge of Vice-Chancellor of SSUS. He will exercise the powers and duties and responsibilities of the vice-chancellor until further orders, it said.
Ms. Geethakumary, Professor, Department of Sanskrit, University of Calicut, was appointed Interim Vice Chancellor of SSUS in March 2024 by former Governor Arif Mohammed Khan.
Mr. Arlekar, who is also chancellor of state universities, recently asked her to shelve several decisions taken by the Syndicate, including its decision to go ahead with the recruitment of permanent assistant professors under the 2021 notification.
The Syndicate members nominated by the Chancellor and the Save University Campaign Committee (SUCC) alleged that the members acted in haste with the Left party as they intended to complete the process before the assembly elections.
The governor also directed the vice chancellor to freeze the decision of the Syndicate to consider the Bachelor of Fine Arts student who failed the examination in 2005 as failed. He was later admitted to the Master of Fine Arts program in violation of norms, according to a complaint filed by SUCC with the governor.
