Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar directed the vice chancellors to strictly enforce the hostel rules and enforce discipline in the universities.
The directive was issued during a meeting with the VC at Lok Bhavan on Tuesday. The interaction, which followed the release of the book and the launch of MOOC courses designed by the University of Calicut, was organized to address concerns related to alleged incidents of student riots in university hostels.
The meeting also decided to constitute a committee chaired by Kerala University acting VC Mohanan Kunnummal to recommend proposals for “preventing violence on university and academic campuses”.
Ahead of the meeting, the VCs were asked to present their views on the recommendations of a commission of inquiry headed by former Kerala High Court judge A. Hariprasad. The commission was set up following the death of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University veterinary student Sidharthan JS in 2024.
The governor also directed the VC to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ by organizing competitions, cultural events and other activities. According to official sources, the instruction was issued on the instructions of the Union government.
