It is increasing awareness of healthy eating habits, as can be seen from the declining amount of rice consumed in the state, said the Minister of Agriculture P. Praad.
He added that, according to studies, more than 56% of diseases were caused by food habits and people in the state should realize this problem more.
The Minister spoke in the inauguration of the Café near Padamugal in Kakkanad as part of the government’s efforts to support the integration of the millet into everyday diet to help deal with diseases like diabetes.
Each district in the state was assigned a Café Proso with government support and the Ernakulam unit on Saturday (May 10, 2025) is part of a chain of restaurants. The café is operated by a group of farmers who are also involved in value.
Mr. Prasad said that a number of millet products need to be expanded to increase their acceptability in public restaurants. “A recent visit to the State Delegation to the National Research Institute in Hyderabad served as a demonstration and eye opening of the diversity of products that can be developed from millet,” he added.
The city chairman of Thrikkakara Radhamani Pillai, who chaired the inauguration function, said that the Café of the millet would help support healthy eating habits among the public. Among the present were President of the District Panchayat Manoj Muthedan and the chairman of the Greater Cochin Development Office K. Chandran Pillai.
The Minister said that the efforts were made to expand the growing of millet in areas such as Attappady in Palakkad. He added that, in addition to Millet cafes, they opened with government support, local authorities, cooperatives and organizations such as Kudumbashree groups, were encouraged to start food stores for millet.
