In a major relief to vehicle owners, the Karnataka government on Thursday announced 50% concession on pending fines for traffic e-challan and certain penalty cases of the transport department.
The exemption will be available from June 21 to July 10, allowing motorists to settle long-standing offenses by paying only half of the prescribed fine amount.
The decision was taken on a motion by the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority before the National Lok Adalat scheduled for July 11. According to a government order issued by the transport ministry on Thursday, the concession applies to all pending cases of traffic e-challans registered by the police department till May 2026.
The benefit was also extended to cases registered by the Department of Transport between 1991 and 2022, which remain unpaid. Vehicle owners can avail the scheme within a 20-day window and have their cases closed by paying 50% of the fine owed.
Officials said similar schemes introduced in the past have received an encouraging response. During the last concession period from November to December 2025, more than 77.4 million cases of traffic violations were solved, resulting in the collection of fines of nearly ₹201 crore. Besides, 902 cases of the traffic department were solved, generating revenue of ₹29.66 crore.
The Karnataka State Legal Services Authority has informed the government that despite previous settlement efforts, a large number of cases still remain pending, with an estimated ₹2,827 crore still recoverable. The latest concession is expected to encourage motorists to pay their dues and reduce the backlog of cases.
The order was issued with the approval of the finance department and will come into effect on June 21.
