The state government on Monday issued GO Ms. No. 7 for setting up a special purpose vehicle named National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park Andhra Pradesh Limited, under the Companies Act, 2013, to promote shipbuilding, ship repair and allied maritime infrastructure at Dugarajapatnam in Tirupati district.
The order issued by MT Krishna Babu, Special Principal Secretary for Infrastructure and Investment, Ports, said the initiative is in line with the Indian government’s vision to increase domestic shipbuilding capacity and accelerate the proposed National Mega Shipbuilding Cluster in Andhra Pradesh.
The Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board had earlier entered into an MoU with the Visakhapatnam Port Authority to set up a shipbuilding cluster at Dugarajapatnam under the Shipbuilding Development Program of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The Maritime Board will now initiate steps to acquire land for the proposed Dugarajapatnam greenfield port and shipbuilding cluster and to commission the new company.
The key objectives of the National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park Andhra Pradesh Limited include the development of shipbuilding, ship repair and heavy engineering facilities such as dry docks, ship lifts, berthing facilities and allied maritime infrastructure. The company will also plan and allocate land to shipyards, ancillary units and the maritime industry, implement projects through PPP and other models, and support a comprehensive maritime manufacturing ecosystem with a focus on ancillary industries, skill development, innovation, research and technology partnerships.
