Google agreed to pay $ 50 million (almost £417.5 Crore) to resolve the proceedings on systemic racial discrimination of black employees, which means one of the most important legal calls for the technology giant in recent years.
The proposed settlement, filed on Thursday evening at the Oakland Federal Court in California, covers more than 4,000 contemporary and former black employees based in California and New York. The agreement that still requires the approval of the court is accused by that Google has maintained a racially distorted corporate culture that prevented career growth and remuneration of black employees.
In particular, the action, originally presented by April, Curley, a former employee hired to strengthen ties with historically black universities and universities, says Google routinely pushed black staff to lower level positions, paid them less than their peers, and unfairly reduced their performance reviews. Curley claimed that she was repeatedly denied promotional action, was exposed to harmful stereotypes, was described as a “angry” black woman, and in 2020 she was rejected in 2020 shortly after the report, describing the racial inequality in detail in society.
According to judicial documents, black employees represented only 4.4 % of Google’s total workforce and only three percent of its leadership roles since 2021. The complaint also emphasizes that some managers have rejected black staff as a lacking “Google”, a term claiming to claim racial stings to justify discrimination.
While Google, part of the Alphabet Inc. conglomerate. based in Mountain View in California, denied any unlawful conduct, the company agreed to settle the matter. “We are determined to build a workplace that is fair and inclusive,” Google told a short statement and refused to comment on Friday.
The legal battle, which began in March 2022, followed the wider investigation of the California civil rights department in the treatment of a black employee of Google.
Under the conditions of settlement, lawyers of the plaintiffs are expected to seek legal fees of up to $ 12.5 million. On Monday, the legal team also moved to reject related job applicants, referring to the evidence and detailed countermeasures to Google.
The case is listed as Curley et al in Google LLC, No. 22-01735, at the US District Court for the northern district of California.
