Why is the 4th May celebrated as Star Wars Day?
4th May is celebrated as Star Wars Day because of a smart pun on the iconic phrase from the films: “May the power be with you.” The fans noticed that “the fourth” sounds almost identical, and they began to say “May the fourth be with you” as a playful honor.
This sentence first received a traction among fans at the end of 2000, but one of the first known applications was in 1979, when London Evening News published a congratulated report to the newly elected Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher: “He can be the fourth with you, Maggie. Congratulations.”
Since then, the date has grown to a global celebration of fans filled with film marathons, thematic events, issues of goods and homage from brands like Disney and Google.
