The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the phase of the 2 project PURE Metro Rail Project, which will expand the existing Vanaz – Ramwadi corridor. The decision was taken at a meeting by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Phase 2 includes two elevated corridors: Vanaz at Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi on Wagholi/Vitthalwadi.
These two corridors will take 12.75 km and include 13 stations, covering the suburbs such as Chandani Chowk, Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi and Wagholi.
According to an official statement, it is planned that the phase 2 project will be completed in four years. Estimated project costs are £3 626,24 Crore, which will be shared by the Center, the government of the Maharashtra and the external bilateral or multilateral agencies.
“This strategic proposal is a logical extension of the existing corridor-2 and is in line with the comprehensive mobility plan (stroke), which assumes continuous Chandan Chowk to the Wagholi Metro corridor to strengthen the mass transit to the east-west in Pune,” the statement said.
“These extensions will serve key IT gaps, commercial areas, educational institutions and residential pockets, which increases the share of public transport and riders throughout the network,” he added.
Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MAHA-Meter) implements the project and performs all civil, electromechanical and related works.
In order to allow trouble-free multimodal urban travel, new corridors will be integrated at the District Court with Linka-1 (Nigdi-Katraj) and Line-3 (Hinjewadi-District Court).
As part of the long -term mobility plan, intercity bus services from cities such as Mumbai and Bengalur will also be integrated at the Chandanani Chowk metro station.
While buses from Ahilya Nagar and CHHhatApati Sambai Nagar will join the Wagholi station.
“These extensions will also help decongest arterial routes such as Paud Road and Nagar Road, offering safe, fast and environmentally friendly mobility options,” the statement said.
“After the completion of these courses, the expected incremental daily rider for the entire line 2 is estimated at 0.96 lakh in 2027, 2.01 Lakh in 2037, 2.87 Lakh in 2047 and 3.49 Lakh in 2057,” he added.
