Former India spinner Amit Mishra feels that being removed as the captain of the Indian ODI side could benefit Rohit Sharma. The Indian opener handed over the reins of the Indian team to Shubman Gill ahead of the Australian tour. Rohit won 42 of the 56 matches he played as captain.
The Indian opener’s last assignment as captain was the Champions Trophy earlier in the year and since then he has been away from international cricket as he retired from Tests. Mishra said Rohit will have the freedom to play and can focus on his performance and help the team win.
Mishra said that Rohit can help Gill with various aspects of captaincy.
“I believe it is good for Rohit that he is no longer under the pressure of captaincy. He has freedom. He has to focus on his performance and help the team win. He can help Gill with various aspects of the captaincy,” Mishra told ANI exclusively.
“It’s good that Gill will be captain soon”
Mishra also supported the decision to make Gill the captain soon to replace Rohit. The former spinner said the 25-year-old has experience of captaincy in the IPL. Mishra feels that giving Gill the captaincy will help him mature quickly and he can serve India for a long time.
I think it’s good for Gill. He has been the captain in the IPL for the last two years. He has led top players around the world. It’s good that Gill is looked up to as a captain. Since he was handed the captaincy early, he will mature quickly and can serve India for a long time. Gill should enjoy herself and try to mature as fast as possible,” said Mishra.
India will begin their new cycle in ODIs under Gill with the upcoming tour of Australia. The Indian team has arrived in the three ODI series, with the first match to be played on 19 October. Rohit had already hit the ground training alongside Virat Kohli in Perth.
