Godavari on the rise in Bhadrachalam while Taliperu swells in upstream Charla mandal

The Godavari started rising in Bhadrachalam with the water level near the first warning mark of 43 feet late on Sunday evening.

According to sources, the river stood at 42.80 feet at 8 pm in the temple town, with a flow of 9.22 lakh cusecs. With the help of inflows from tributaries, especially from Taliperu, the water level rose from 36.60 feet at 1:00 am to 42.80 feet by evening. The water level was expected to remain stable in the coming hours as the rains in most of the upper reaches of the river have subsided, sources said.

However, the Taliperu reservoir in Charla mandal continued to receive significant inflows from its catchments in neighboring Chhattisgarh. Six spillway gates of the Taliperu Intermediate Irrigation Project were opened earlier in the day, releasing flood waters downstream into the Godavari.

Meanwhile, in Kashinagaram, Pragallapalli and various other villages in Dummugudem mandal of Bhadrachalam agency, nurseries of several farmers were reportedly damaged following heavy rains in the last three days. Stagnation of water in several paddy fields in some of these villages has caused distress to farmers, even as rains have brought relief to farmers elsewhere in the district after a long dry spell.
