An FIR has been registered in the Thar crash case in Goa, which has left one dead, media reported on Wednesday.
According to NDTV, the police have filed a criminal complaint for the offense of manslaughter.
A 65-year-old tourist from Bhopal died on Monday after a rented Mahindra Thar SUV collided with the family’s hatchback at the Happy Bar junction in North Goa’s Assagao.
The victim, Bhagatram Sharma, who was traveling in a Hyundai i20 with family members, was declared dead on the spot due to injuries sustained in the accident.
The other occupants of the Hyundai i20 were taken to hospital, the Hindustan Times reported, adding that one passenger, a woman, suffered minor injuries. A five-month-old infant who was also in the i20 escaped unhurt.
What we know about the crash
According to reports, the accident happened on Monday, but details remain scarce.
However, videos doing the rounds on social media show that one side of the i20 has been completely crushed.
Eyewitnesses claimed that passengers on the Thar tried to change their seats immediately after the collision, with HT reporting that the move was to protect the driver – said to be a woman – from liability.
“A male member of the group went after the accident and sat in the driver’s seat,” eyewitness and local resident Myron Fernandes told HT.
Videos posted online showed several youths, including three young women and a young man, inside the car.
In the video, a male Tharu resident speaks on the phone: “Dad, I was at the intersection…,” he says before his voice trails off.
After the accident, the police impounded the rented Mahindra Thar and registered a case of rash and negligent driving, reported HT.
“Further investigation is underway to find out the exact sequence of events that led to the collision,” the police officer said.
