Global south was often the victim of “double standards”, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday when addressing the BRICS Summit.
Global South in terms of urgent problems such as climate financing, sustainable development and technological approach, often received nothing but tokens gestures, Modi said in his notes at the first plenary meeting.
PM Modi criticized mere “token gestures” in questions like pure technology and sustainability, and urged the main economies to do more.
The Prime Minister also promoted urgent reforms of key bodies, including the UN Security Council.
Since BRICS is expanding, it adds Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, SAE in 2024 and Indonesia in 2025, PM Modi stressed that these new members show the adaptability of the group and growing importance for emerging nations.
“I have expressed my views on why the voice of global south is more important than ever and why it is necessary for global institutions to provide reasonable representation in the global south for their own credibility and efficiency,” Modi wrote in the X post.
He also added: “In this AI era, where technology is updated every week, it is unacceptable that global institutions have not been updated once every eighty years. Software 21. Century cannot run on the 20th century typewriter!”
“BRICS expansion clearly shows that BRICS is an organization that can change with the times. Now we have to prove the same determination for reforms in institutions such as the UN, WTO and Multilateral Development Bank Security Council,” PM said.
PM Modi emphasized India’s readiness to lead with a mission of national interest. In Rio, he stressed that India and Brics were trying to “climb over their own interests” and collectively serve humanity.
This summit limited the journey of five nations, which began in Ghana 2 July, where PM Modi received a high honor officer of the Order of the Ghana Star and acknowledged its leadership in cooperation with South and South and shared democratic value.
His next stop was Trinidad and Tobago, where he became the first foreign leader to be granted the Order of the Republic during the Covid -19, the country’s highest honor, and recognized his global leadership, diaspora and humanitarian efforts.
This was followed by a historical visit to Argentina, where PM Modi was introduced by a symbolic key to Buenos Aires, which means strong friendship and cooperation in energy, lithium and defensive sector. These awards reflect not only personal recognition, but also Indian global influence and deeper links on continents.
