The ICICI Foundation Glaucoma Center and Uvea Center was inaugurated at Sankara Nethralaya on Tuesday.
Girish Shiva Rao, president and chief medical officer, Sankara Nethrayala, said they have transformed two floors that have been providing services for over four decades.
Operating theaters and inpatient areas were converted into outpatient areas.
He hoped more companies would help them renovate their infrastructure to provide quality eye care without compromise.
Shantanu Samaddar, Country Head – ICICI Bank Ltd, Tamil Nadu gave an outline of the work being done by ICICI Foundation, including skill development and health, including rural health. According to him, in the last two years they have focused on health and cooperated with like-minded institutions.
M. Baskaran, Principal, Smt. Jadhavbai Nathamal Singhvee Glaucoma Services, Sankara Nethralaya, said the department has all modern equipment for glaucoma treatment. Last year, it received 20,000 to 25,000 patients (old and new) and performed 2,500 to 3,000 major operations. Between 150 and 200 children were treated. The department also provided genetic counseling. Amala Elizabeth George, deputy director of the Uvea Centre, said uvea, a rare and complex disease, contributes to 10 to 15% of blindness worldwide.
