Gig workers union seeks pensions for workers

The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) on Thursday sought better pension coverage, greater participation of digital platforms and stronger social security protection for gig workers.

The Pension Funds Regulatory and Development Authority is expanding access to pensions for platform workers through the NPS e-Shramik model, according to the union. This, the union said, allows digital aggregators to facilitate registration.

TGPWU founder and president Shaik Salauddin said access to retirement should be accompanied by fair earnings, transparent contributions and stronger social security.

He also looked for affordable savings options, portability of retirement accounts and multilingual information campaigns to help workers understand the benefits, risks and rules of opting out of the scheme.
