
On Wednesday, a strong earthquake struck 8.7 magnitude off the coast of the Russian Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia and triggered tsunami with waves reaching up to 4 meters (13 feet). The earthquake led to damage to building and forced evacuation in affected areas.

“Today’s earthquake was serious and powerful for decades of tremor,” said Governor Kamchatka Vladimir Solodov in a video published in Telegram Messaging.

The tsunami waves between 3 and 4 meters (10-13 feet) were reported in parts of Kamchatka, according to Sergei Lebedev, regional minister of emergency situations that urged the inhabitants to keep away from the coast of the peninsula.
American geological survey said the earthquake was relatively shallow and occurred at a depth of 19.3 km (12 million). It was located about 125 km (80 miles) east-south-east of Petropavlovsk-kamchatic, a coastal city of 165,000 located along the Gulf of Avacha. The agency later upgraded the size of the earthquake from the initial 8.0 to 8.7.
The Japanese Meteorological Agency upgraded its warnings and said it expected that the waves of tsunami up to 3 meters (10 feet) would reach large coastal areas from 0100 GMT. NHK broadcasting said that the government has issued orders for evacuation in some areas.

The US warning system also released a warning against “dangerous tsunami” over the next three hours along some coasts of Russia, Japan and Hawaii. The watch tsunami was also valid for the American island territory of Guam and on other islands of Micronesia.

The evacuation order for the small town of Sever-Kušku, south of the peninsula, was declared because of the threat of tsunami, said Governor Sakhalin Valery Limarenko on the telegram.
