In the fresh landscape of the Kanniyakumari district, Nannari is growing – a herb that local communities appreciate for generations, known for its cooling properties and honor as a traditional cure for ulcers in the mouth.
Tamil Nadu Malaivaazh Makkal Sangam, Kulsekaram, along with the Patent Information Center Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, was looking for a geographical indication brand (GI) for Kanniyakumari Nannari to preserve his identity and promote his unique regional value. The intervener for use was Noorul Islam Center for Higher Education, Kumaracoil, Kanniyakumari.
Kanniyakumari Nanari (Indian Sarsaparilla) is stronger, more aromatic and deeper in color compared to conventional Nanari. The roots are dried by the sun, cleaned and stored for medicinal and culinary use. Other key Nanari products are Nannari and Nanari Honey. Another known by -product of the herb is the refreshing Nannari Sarbath (traditional Indian drink).
The primary production areas are concentrated in Taluks Agastheeswaam, Thovallai, Vilavancode and Calculance. In these regions are villages and suburban clusters surrounding NerCOIL, Marthandam, Thuckalay and bootapandy especially recognized for growing Nannari and for the traditional preparation of Kanniyakumari Nannari Sarbath. This is prepared by cooking Nannari roots to create a syrup, which is then combined with lemon juice and cold water.
According to the details of GI, the Kani tribe, indigenous at the southern western Ghats in Kanniyakumari, has a rich tradition of using medicinal plants, including haemides indica. While the specific documentation of Nannari’s cultivation by Kani is limited, their extensive knowledge of the local flora suggests its use in traditional medicine. Roots are used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic products as blood cleaner, body coolant and digestive aid. Historical references to the healing use of Nanari root are found in Siddha and Ayurveda. It has been sold for more than 80 years in herbal stores across Nercoil, Marthandam and near areas.
