The University of Mysore’s Manasagangotri campus may soon host a ‘Gen Z’ themed post office, on the lines of similar modern post shops recently introduced in educational institutions in Bengaluru.
The Post Office initiative aims to bridge the gap between traditional postal services and the younger generation by offering aesthetically designed, cafe-style spaces that will attract students and youth who otherwise stay away from Post Office initiatives.
Sandesh Mahadevappa, Director of Postal Services (HQ), Karnataka Postal Circle, told reporters in Mysuru on Saturday that the campus post offices will be significantly different from the regular formats. “These centers are specially designed to provide a whole new customer experience,” he said, adding that two such Gen Z-themed post offices have already been launched in two colleges in Bengaluru.
According to Mr. Mahadevappa, a similarly aesthetic and technologically integrated post office in Mysuru with e-commerce services is in the works. “We want it to be opened in the University of Mysore campus and I have asked my staff to liaise with the university authorities. It will be done soon,” he said.
He also noted that a new software platform has been introduced to modernize postal services, which includes technical upgrades and new-age digital features to improve efficiency and customer experience.
V. Tara, Director of Postal Services, Karnataka Postal Circle, said the department is focusing on promoting Geographical Indication (GI) products and the ‘One District One Product’ initiative to encourage artisans and boost exports. MoUs were signed to promote exports through post offices in favor of traditional handicraft industries. She added that approximately 50 post offices already provide such services.
