As the decks clear for civic polls in Bengaluru after more than a decade, the draft voter lists for all 369 constituencies were released for public inspection on Monday as per the guidelines issued by the State Election Commission. The final notification will be published on March 16.
“The period for filing complaints and objections will be from January 20 to February 3. These will be processed between February 4 and 18 and the final electoral rolls will be published on March 16. The constituency-level voter numbers will be uploaded on the official website by January 19 evening,” Special Commissioner (Elections) Ramachandran R. said.
Regarding the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, Karnataka Chief Election Commissioner GS Sangreshi said the State Election Commission is conducting a similar exercise as elsewhere.
Referring to Bihar, he said while the central government was conducting the exercise there, the state government was doing it in Karnataka. October 1 was set as the qualifying date for inclusion in the lists.
According to the draft electoral rolls, GBA has a total electorate of 88.91 million voters. Bengaluru West City Corporation accounts for the highest number of voters with 27.25 lakh, followed by Bengaluru North with 19.54 lakh, Bengaluru South with 17.44 lakh, Bengaluru Central with 14.25 lakh and Bengaluru East with 10.41 lakh.
Among the 369 wards, RR Nagar (Ward No. 23) in Bengaluru West City Municipal Corporation has the highest number of voters with 49,530, while Kotthur (Ward No. 16) in Bengaluru East City Municipal Corporation has the lowest voter base with 10,926 voters.
Referring to the Mahadevapura constituency, where allegations were made earlier that around 40,000 voters had given fake addresses in the electoral rolls, the state Chief Election Commissioner said special attention would be given during the civic polls to avoid such problems. He said officials have already been instructed to be vigilant and ensure that such situations do not occur.
