GBA executive committee meeting focuses on filling up lakes, shifting 103 bus stops

The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) on Thursday directed the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to focus on curbing leakages and coordinate with city corporations in implementing its annual action plan.

Knowing that rainwater harvesting systems were failing in some cases, resulting in water entering the sewerage network, the BWSSB was directed to launch a special drive to identify irregularities, GBA chief M. Maheswar Rao said after the third GBA executive committee meeting on Thursday.

Further, the water board has been directed to coordinate with the corporations for the filling of city lakes under Cauvery Stage V and through sewage treatment plants, he said.

Mr. Rao said the Fire and Rescue Service had submitted a list of 55 locations in the city where a network of fire hydrants could be installed. Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda, who chaired the executive committee meeting, also directed the department to review the need for foam fire extinguishers.

Mr. Rao said the corporators were told to speed up the Suraksha 75 project aimed at reducing accidents in the city.

Mr. Byre Gowda ordered the completion of footpath at Iblur Junction on Outer Ring Road, one of the most congested junctions in the city. He further asked BMTC and other officials of the department to come up with an action plan to improve the first and last mile connectivity to promote public transport.

Mr. Rao said the minister also ordered shifting of 103 bus stands in the city to remove traffic jams. He also said that the CCTV cameras installed under the Safe City project could be used for civic work purposes such as identifying potholes or littering.
