M. Maheshwar Rao, Chief Commissioner of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), has ordered a comprehensive fire safety audit of KR Market amid concerns over fire hazards in the premises.
During an inspection of the market on Tuesday, Mr. Rao directed civic officials to assess fire risks, emergency preparedness measures and evacuation systems. He also instructed them to ensure the presence of adequate emergency exits and install fire infrastructure to enable quick response in case of fire.
Mr. Rao asked officials to identify and remove encroachments in front of shops within the market complex and impose double penalties on violators. He also directed the officials to maintain the existing public toilets, demolish dilapidated blocks in the premises and ensure regular cleaning of the market hall.
To address monsoon-related issues, he ordered officials to plug leaks in the market’s glass roofs every week, improve drainage systems and clean areas prone to waterlogging.
Mr. Rao further directed the officials to prepare a plan for effective utilization of the unused third floor of the market building. He also suggested exploring the possibility of setting up revenue and waste management offices on this floor.
