Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have already made a compelling case for inclusion in India’s ODI World Cup 2027 squad after their impressive performances in the third ODI against Australia on Saturday, October 25.
Speaking to India Today, the legendary opener suggested that the very fact that both the stalwarts made themselves available for the ongoing three-match series was a clear signal of their intention to stay involved in the ODI setup and stand for another shot at the world title.

“The moment they made themselves available for this trip, it was clear that they wanted to be there for the 2027 World Cup,” Gavaskar noted. “And no matter what happens in between – whether they score or not – with the ability and experience they have, if they are available, they will be a certainty in the team.”
Gavaskar further emphasized that their current form only strengthens their claim to be automatic selections for the marquee event, adding: “With this kind of form, you can write their names straight into World Cup squad for South Africa 2027.”
After a subdued start to the series, Rohit Sharma rediscovered his rhythm and followed up his half-century in the second ODI with a fluent century in the decider at the SCG. His knock was a reminder of the class and poise that defined his ODI career. Virat Kohli, on the other hand, had a tougher start, with two consecutive ducks in the opening matches. However, true to his reputation, he bounced back strongly with a gritty fifty in the ODI final to help India to victory despite the series going in Australia’s favour.
While India ultimately fell behind in the series, the performances of their senior professionals secured the silver bar. Both Rohit and Kohli have shown they still have a lot to offer at the highest level – in skill, fitness and hunger. Still, their partnership and consistency could be key as India look to rebuild and mount a strong challenge for the 2027 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, a trophy they narrowly missed out on a year ago.
