A gardener who sexually assaulted a seven-year-old girl in a colonial park last December has been sentenced to life in prison. The accused was also found responsible for assaulting another child.
Verdict, handed down XII. by the Nampally Additional Sessions Court, ordered rigorous imprisonment for life, which means that the convict will remain in jail for the rest of his natural life.
The accused, Gowtham Rajbangshi (44), a gardener in Bowenpally, took the seven-year-old girl to a secluded spot in the park on December 3 and sexually assaulted her.
The incident only came to light when the child informed the mother on December 11, prompting her father to contact the police. During the investigation, the police found out that a nine-year-old girl was also attacked by him.
The Karkhan police arrested him soon after the case was registered and investigators collected scientific, medical and documentary evidence before filing a detailed charge sheet. The prosecution argued the case under the relevant provisions of the POCSO Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Act.
The verdict was delivered by Judge T. Anitha, who convicted him after a detailed trial.
