New Delhi: Police on Wednesday said an FIR has been registered in connection with the late-night shooting at a car carrying a lawyer associated with jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi near ISBT in Kashmir Gate.
Gangster Naveen Boxer has reportedly claimed responsibility for the attack through a social media post purported to be from him.
A case was registered at the Kashmere Gate police station under sections 109(1) (attempt to murder) and 3(5) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act on a complaint by advocate Deepak Khatri, police said.
Khatri had previously received threats of violence, a police source said.
At around 10:10 pm on Tuesday, a car was targeted in a firing attack near Marghat Wale Hanuman Temple near ISBT. There were five passengers in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
One of the passengers suffered a bullet wound to the shoulder and was taken to hospital. Police say he is stable and out of danger.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Raja Banthia said the occupants of the car gave different accounts of the number of assailants involved in the attack.
Meanwhile, shortly after the incident, a post appeared on social media in which gangster Naveen Boxer allegedly claimed responsibility for the shooting.
A post shared from the profile with his name and photo said he and his associates carried out the attack and also threatened Khatri.
“He is acting as an informant and middleman for Lawrence. You are arranging extortion deals and bringing information during meetings – stop it. Otherwise your actions will be punished and your entire family will have to suffer the consequences,” the post read.
Police said they were verifying the authenticity of the social media account and the claims.
“We are investigating the pillar and its origin. Based on the findings, appropriate legal action will be taken,” the officer said.
A forensics team examined the scene and collected evidence. CCTV footage from the surrounding areas is being scanned to identify the assailants and track their escape route, the police added.
