The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), on Friday, July 25, ordered blocking 25 over-the-top platforms for alleged publication of obscene, vulgar and in some cases with pornographic material.
25 OTT platforms concerned have been found to include ulla, altt, big shots, desiflix application
Why were OTT platforms banned?
OTT platforms were banned because a large part of the content on the platforms was largely explicit and contained long sequences of nudity and pornographic visuals, the sources of the Ministry said.
“There was almost no story, topic or message in the social context,” the ministry said in its statement.
It has also been found that some content shows inappropriate sexual situations involving family relationships, which further worsens concerns about legality and decency, PTI said sources as a proverb.
Previously, the Council for Digital Content Publishing (DPCGC) criticized Altt and said that the content of the application was “absolutely disgusting and bizarre”, while sex and nudity were reported without any context justification.
Before Friday’s intervention, the Ministry of Broadcasting in February, also issued advice that urged OTT platforms to adhere to Indian obscenity and an ethics code prescribed under IT, 2021.
Arrest controversy; View with the seam
In May, the reality show was “House Hotrest” ULU platform after a massive resistance over alleged explicit content and visuals in the web series.
In one clip that was viral from the controversial show, the host Ajaz Khan was reportedly seen to push the participants of women to engage in intimate acts on the camera, despite their visible discomfort and repeated rejection.
A total of 100 web series were also removed from the platform after DPCC found that Ulla had either temporarily removed or edited the website and then after a while recorded the unread version to walk around the warning.
