Meg Lanning has confirmed that she will return to the WPL in 2027, after a tough season with the UP Warriors in 2026. In the first three seasons of the WPL, Lanning has enjoyed tremendous success, helping Delhi Capitals finish at the top of the table and eventually as runners-up.
However, her tenure with the Warriorz was challenging a team that did not qualify for the playoffs under her captaincy. The Warriorz finished the season at the bottom of the table, picking up just four points and posting a -1.076 net run, the lowest of all five teams.
Although Lanning retired from international cricket in November 2023, she continued to compete in domestic cricket, representing Victoria in the WNCL, the Melbourne Stars in the WBBL and the Capitals and Warriorz in the WPL.
“THE FIRE IS STILL THERE”
Expressing her passion for getting the best out of her teammates, Lanning confirmed she plans to return next season with the goal of playing for a few more years.
“Yes, absolutely. I’m still enjoying my cricket. I love playing and coming into teams like this and trying to get the best out of people and also trying to get the best out of myself. I’m very competitive. I like to try and win and that fire is definitely still there.”
“So sure, I’ll be back next year and hopefully a little longer,” Lanning said after Sunday’s game against the Capitals.
HOW DID WARRIORZ DO IN WPL 2026?
In their last league game on Sunday against the Capitals, the UP Warriorz needed a lead of 156 runs or more to qualify for the playoffs. However, they were bowled out after the first innings as they managed to set the Capitals a modest target of 123 runs which the Capitals chased down comfortably to win by five wickets. With the win, DC secured a spot in the playoffs.

Meg Lanning has been one of the few bright spots for the Warriorz all season. She scored 248 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 125.25 and finished as the fourth highest run-scorer in the league stage, despite this being her lowest WPL total to date.
Lanning played several crucial innings, including a 41-run knock against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. In one of the rare wins for UP Warriorz, she scored 70 runs and shared a partnership of 119 runs with Phoebe Litchfield to help the team defeat Mumbai Indians by 22 runs.
