Again, the fine fibers of Kannura’s legendary hand traditions travel to the capital. This Onam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and seven trade union ministers will receive their onakkodi, festive clothing, woven in the heart of Kannura with qualified hands of Loketh Weavers in Melechovva.
Efforts, led by a team from the Directorate for Hand and Fabrics, include the creation of nine unique Kurt patterns – two contrasting color designs for the Prime Minister and one for ministers, including Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari and Rajnath Singh.
Each piece is about five meters long. Stitch Kurtas will be prepared by the tailor unit Hantex in Thiruvananthapurama, said P. Vinod Kumar, secretary, Loketh Weavers. “It’s been the third year that we are in charge of this honor,” he said.
“In the first year we got the design we were supposed to do. We had to choose a fabric and a formula after consulting with the Hantex technical team. Similarly this year. . He said they create a substance for the Prime Minister using eight Cancer (Warp) and four sludge (Tue), creating weaving tone with a diagonal line effect. “It’s not just a substance. It is the identity of Keraly to Delhi,” he added.
Kv Sahaja, 49 years, Master Weaving with more than 20 years of experience, leads a job for the Prime Minister’s onakkodi. “This is the first time I have talked under the prime minister. In every throwing shuttle is responsibility and excitement,” said Mrs. Sahaja without looking from him. She finished the production of fabrics on Thursday and sends them to sewing by Friday.
“I’ve been working on the last two weeks. It’s challenging and requires a lot of concentration. The premiere is used a combination of four colors, including black, purple and brown and white mixtures,” said Mrs. Sahaja. The fabric is created in tissue binding, which is a technique that requires patience. The final result, however, is worth every hour spent, she added.
“For us, not only the festive task. It is the spirit of Kannur, who addressed the highest offices of the Earth,” said Mr. Vinod Kumar, repeating the pride of the community weaving.
