The first main upset of Roland Garroš came the second day of the competition. The fourth seed of Taylor Fritz from the United States was discarded in the first round of men’s first round No. 66 Daniel Altmaier from Germany in Simonne-Mathieu in two hours and 41 minutes on Monday 26 May. In the next result with the 10th seed Paul Bados fought from the orchard to beat Naomi Osaka in the female single first match.
Fritz became the second player in the TOP 10, who bowed in the first round, after the 9th seed of Emmy Navarro after the defeat 1-6, 1-6, Bouzas Maneiro in the female single first collision on Monday.
Fritz, known for his powerful ground floor, was returned in his own game when Altmaier gave the championship class in a strike. After the opening set of 7-5 was opened, the Germans dropped the second and it was generally expected that Fritz would find his rhythm and relax into the second round.
However, Altmaier was strongly reflected to seal the victory of 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 and book his place in the second round. The 26 -year -old German exhibited flashes for the form, which in 2020 introduced him to the fourth round in Roland Garros.
Altmaier has become accustomed to upset big names in Paris. In 2020, the world no. 8 Matteo Berrettini stunned and in 2023 defeated the contemporary world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.
“I think I’ve worked really hard in recent weeks to gain confidence, preparing for these kinds of matches. I feel like I’m ready to play anyone who will face me. I’m really glad I won this first victory and I really love my performance,” Altmaier said.
Nadal’s track inspires Bados
Meanwhile, in the Philippe-Chamrier court, Sparks flew when the 10 seed Badosa mounted a lively comeback to defeat Naomi Osaka. The Spaniard lost the opening set in the tie-breaker, but found that its range overcame Osaka 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 in two hours and 21 minutes.
Badosa paid the final tribute to Rafael Nadal and told that the newly installed track of the fourteen -time champion in the cult court inspired her to resist the first set.
“I have to say that when I was 7-6 down, the first thing I did was to look there (on Nadal’s track),” she said after her victory.
Roland Garros introduced a plaque on a court on Sunday carrying Nadal’s track and signature. Court Philippe-Chamrier now carries his brand forever.
