The state government will construct the Kittur Channamma Freedom Park at Kittur Fort in Belagavi district at a cost of ₹40 crore, Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said on Sunday.
The state government will also give financial nod to the Channavrushabhendra irrigation project, estimated to cost ₹520 crore, as it will benefit the Kittur region, he said at the valedictory function of Kittur Utsav.
“Local leaders and legislators have proposed the creation of a Freedom Park to serve as a visual narrative in the fort premises. It will have a sound and light show and hi-tech installations to showcase the historical significance of the royal house of Kittur. Funds for the construction of this Freedom Park will be allocated in the upcoming budget. A formal government order regarding this will be issued immediately,” he said.
In the near future, the North-West Road Transport Corporation will be renamed as Kittur Rani Channamma Road Transport Corporation, the Chief Minister said.
He appreciated the valor and spirit of Kittur Rani Channamma who led a brave fight against the British East India Company in 1824 and won the Battle of Kittur.
“Her bravery is not just a matter of history, it serves as a lesson of self-respect for future generations. Her heroic deeds are an inspiration to us all. Her sacrifice is immortal,” he said.
“The legacy of self-respect, bravery and courage embodied by Kittur Rani Channamma continues in this country. May Kittur Channamma serve as an inspiration to everyone,” he said.
He said that the state government would take steps to make Vijaya Jyoti of Kittur serve as a beacon for the development of the region and its people.
“People have entrusted us with power. We will make honest efforts to repay this debt. We have started Praja Seva department to reach people at their doorstep and address their grievances on the spot,” he said.
