A four-year-old girl was allegedly abducted from a railway shed and sexually assaulted in Tarakeshwar in West Bengal’s Hooghly district, officials said on Sunday (Nov 9, 2025).
The incident took place on Saturday (November 8, 2025) when the child was sleeping next to her grandmother near the railway shed, they said.
The minor was found with injuries in the area on Saturday (November 8, 2025) afternoon, the official said.
The girl was initially taken to a local hospital and later referred to a sub-divisional hospital in Chandannagar, he said.
A police officer said one person has been detained in connection with the incident and is being questioned.
A case has also been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO), he said.
Local Trinamool Congress MLA Ramendu Singha Roy told PTI, “It is a shocking incident but it happened in an area under the jurisdiction of the railways. There should be more security measures and vigilance by the railway police. We stand with the girl’s family and the police have started an investigation.”
National Commission for Women member Archana Majumdar said she has taken cognizance of the incident but “we will check the legal parameters as it also falls under the jurisdiction of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights. If allowed, I will visit the family in a day or two.”
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari alleged that the Tarakeswar police were initially reluctant to register a First Information Report (FIR) about the incident.
In a post on X, Mr Adhikari accused the police of “burying crime” to cover up a “false image of law and order by suppressing the truth”.
“Mamata Banerjee, you are a failed Chief Minister. Law and order in West Bengal has hit a ROCK under your rule,” he claimed in the post.
BJP activists also staged a protest demonstration outside the Tarakeshwar police station and demanded severe punishment for the perpetrators.
